An investigation is underway into an attempted jailbreak at the Portmore Police Station in St. Catherine — more popularly known as 'Hundred Man' — early Wednesday morning.

Senior Superintendent Christopher Phillips, Commanding officer for the St. Catherine South Division, confirmed with Radio Jamaica News that some of the prisoners broke free from their cells before the attempted jailbreak was foiled.

"The team that was on patrol at the facility, heard suspicious movements and discussions taking place within the cell. When they went to check they were attacked by prisoners who managed to cut themselves out of eight cells," he revealed.

The police eventually got the prisoners under control.

SSP Phillips said a "comprehensive assessment" is being conducted and as soon as this is complete, he will provide further details.

Meanwhile, a visitor to the lock-up, Sherisa Pryce, said she had difficulty getting information from the police about the disturbance.

Ms. Pryce, whose son is a detainee at the facility, said she was told visitation has now been restricted "until further notice".
