One of the country's chief prosecutors believes policymakers have not done all they can to tackle the rising number of cases relating to sexual offences.
Speaking at the opening of the Michaelmas Term of the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston on Monday, King's Counsel Jeremy, Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, pointed out that not enough attention is given to sexual offences.
Mr. Taylor, while making it clear that he was not speaking on behalf of the acting Director of Public Prosecutions, argued that operations and legislation have been amended to tackle firearms and murders.
But he contended that sexual offences have become cultural, adding that hardly any legislative changes are being made to remedy the issue.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions revealed that 413 sexual offence cases have been brought over from the Easter term.
Rape accounted for 178 of those cases while having sex with a person under 16 years old accounted for 137.
The statistics also revealed that there are 24 new sexual offence cases to be heard this term.
Rape accounts for 10 of those cases.
