Regional media said to be facing existential crisis, as Digicel announces closure of Loop News and SportsMax TV

Jamaican media professionals are reacting with concern to the financial sustainability of regional media outlets.

This follows Digicel's recent announcement that it has ceased operations of Loop News, effective Tuesday, and will wind down SportsMax TV by August 8.

President of the Press Association of Jamaica, Dashan Hendricks, responding Tuesday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, noted that the shutdown of both entities is part of a wider trend, as media companies struggle to earn enough revenue to stay afloat.

Brian Schmidt, Marketing Manager at Irie FM, confirmed that media houses across the Caribbean are facing similar financial challenges.

He stressed that if conditions don't improve, more companies may follow Digicel's lead in scaling back or shutting down operations.
