Regulations to accompany Jamaica's new Road Traffic Act will soon be in place.

Transport Minister Robert Montague on Tuesday told the House of  Representatives that the regulations will soon be completed.

The new road traffic law, which replaces the 1938 Act, was passed by the House of Representatives in February 2018 and ten months later by the Senate.

The new law has larger fines and harsher penalties.

The Minister said that after the regulations have been approved his ministry will undertake "a rigorous public education programme and aggressively pursue strategies to combat the high road fatalities..."

He added that special efforts will be made to improve the safety practices of motor cyclists, who account for a significant number of fatalities on the roads every year.

Mr Montague also announced that a new system is coming to help eliminate corruption in the issuing of  motor vehicle fitness certificates, with electronic geofencing of motor vehicles taken to the examination depot being a major feature of the new system.

It will begin with a pilot project.
