There is an intensified effort underway to curb incidents of drowning in sections of St. Elizabeth
Hotelier Jason Henzel has outlined that a major component of the programme is the erection of signs across several beaches located along the Treasure Beach strip.
According to Mr. Henzell the programme is specifically geared towards educating and highlightng beach safety to members of the public, as well as trying to minimise near drownings and drownings in Treasure Beach .
Mr, Henzell has also confirmed that the erection of the signs is a colloboration involving Tourism Product Development Company, St. Elizabeth Muncipal Corporation, the non profit foundation Breds Tourism Development, and Member of Parliament for St. Elizabeth South West Floyd Green.
Mr. Henzell has noted that some of the recorded drownings in and around Treasure Beach could have been avoided if beach goers had paid attention to the warings of local residents.
The Jakes Hotel operator said the drownings have been a major concern for business operators and have painted a bad picture for the destination.
The other aspect of the beach safety programme being pursued involves the hiring of local lifeguards, but he says says that initiative has not yet reached implementation stage.
He said there's also a major problem with beach goers venturing to secluded beach spots, and when they encounter difficulty, there is no immediate assistance, and it hoped that the placement of caution signs will help to lower that risk.
