Road Safety Council urges caution on roads amid Olympic fever

Despite a noted dip in traffic collision figures for this month, Vice Chair of the National Road Safety Council, Dr. Lucien Jones, is urging caution on the roads as Jamaicans prepare to celebrate during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Dr. Jones says motorists must be mindful as they celebrate the success of Jamaican athletes participating in the Games.

"Jamaicans get very excited about track and field especially. And therefore, when we are celebrating victory or agonising about defeat, let us be very careful how we drive on the roads and react to either good news or bad news," he said.

"We don't want any drama to happen during the Olympics because of either victory or defeat. So this is a message for us to be extremely careful over the next couple of weeks. Yes, we want to celebrate, but more than ever, we want to maintain the downward trajectory that has happened during the month of July," Dr. Jones maintained.

Twelve people have been killed in motor vehicle crashes since the start of this month, compared with 27 for the corresponding period last year.

This represents a 12 per cent decline.
