The St. Andrew South Police Division is moving to improve safety and security in schools within the division.
Commanding Officer, Superintendent Damion Manderson, says school resource officers (SROs) play a key role in maintaining order and imparting important life skills.
As a result, he says the division will be increasing the number of school resource officers.
"...In addition to the four SROs that we have already had over the past month or two, we have now added another two SROs. We met with your principals and we made a commitment that we're going to find the resources to put more police officers in our schools for safer spaces to be created. And we are sticking to that commitment," he maintained.
Superintendent Manderson said the increase "reflects our deliberate and ongoing effort to strengthen the partnerships with schools and to ensure that every child can learn and grow in a safe environment".
He underscored the importance of a safe school space, noting that this usually leads to thriving communities.
"Where schools are safe, communities are safe; where communities are safe, schools are safe. When our children feel safe, they can focus on learning, they can focus on their dreams and they can focus on their achievements," he added.
