Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, head of the St. Catherine North Police
The St. Catherine North Police say they have seized three more illegal guns as part of their ongoing crackdown on criminal activities in Spanish Town and adjoining communities in the division.
The firearms along with 50 rounds of ammunition were seized on the weekend.
Two of the firearms were seized following the fatal shooting of two suspects during reported confrontations with the police.
This was disclosed by head of the division, Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, during a press briefing on Monday afternoon.
"The first one was on Saturday, November 9, shortly after midnight along Job's Lane. A man attacked police officers, who were in plain clothes, with a firearm. The police officers immediately took evasive action and the man was shot and injured. A nine millimeter pistol, loaded with ten rounds, was seized from this man. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead," he reported.
Superintendent Nicholson said the man had been seen on a construction site for a housing scheme in Old Harbour on Friday.
He is encouraging builders and homeowners not to hire hoodlums on construction sites.
The second suspect was killed in the Riversdale community.
Fifty-one illegal guns and 525 rounds of ammunition have been seized by the St. Catherine North Police since January.
There has been a 40 per cent reduction in murders in the division.
