The St. Mary Police are celebrating the gains made in reducing major crimes across the parish.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Romeo Henry says despite some areas being of concern, there have been great strides made in reducing criminal activity.
"Amidst all the challenges that we face, St. Mary is doing a good job in crime fighting. We're doing very well when we compare ourselves to last year because our intention is to try to do better each year. So last year, this time, for example, we had like about 34 murders in the entire St. Mary Division. But this year we are reporting that we are nine less. So we are at 25 murders...or if you do the math for percentages, about 26?crease in murders."
Overall, he said major crimes, which include shootings, rape, robberies, etc, are down by two, compared to the same period last year.
He was addressing a Jamaica Teachers' Association meeting in St. Mary.
