With the steady rise of the number of murders in the
country, the Government is again being pressured to allow more private citizens
to bear arms.
The National Gun Rights Association (NGRA) says it is the right time for the administration to cut some of the red tape that prevents law abiding Jamaicans from carrying legal guns.
There have been talks that if more Jamaicans are allowed to carry guns there will be more shootings.
But according to Shawn Johnson NGRA Chairman, the opposite will occur.
"That argument is still being put forward sometimes, but in the countries that where firearms are issued liberally, we don't see any situation where people go out in the streets and act widely," he said.
Mr. Johnson contends that if proper checks and balances are in place, then there would be no cause for concern.
"We advocate for these checks and balances ... there's a place for the Firearm Licencing Authority and the police ought to do their job but we cannot to have decent law abiding citizens not being in a position to defend themselves," he said.
On Thursday, the NGRA will host a meeting in Kingston to educate more Jamaicans about their rights and responsibilities to own guns.
