Trinidad & Tobago recognizes Palestine as independent state

Trinidad & Tobago has formally recognised the State of Palestine, saying that it hopes this will assist in the achievement of lasting peace by strengthening the growing international consensus on the issue of Palestinian statehood.

A statement issued by the Ministry of CARICOM and Foreign Affairs said the decision to recognise Palestine was taken by the Cabinet at its weekly meeting yesterday.

The Cabinet said the twin island republic has a long history of principled support for the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

It said the government's consistent position is that a two-state solution is the only way out of the ongoing cycle of violence.
