Tropical Storm Rafael: Weather alerts discontinued, but more rain expected

As flood waters associated with Tropical Storm Rafael continue to recede, residents in low lying and flood prone areas are being urged to remain vigilant.

Motorists, pedestrians and other road users are also being warned to avoid crossing flooded fords, streets or other areas.

The Met Service discontinued weather alerts associated with Tropical Storm Rafael at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

But it advised that as the centre of the storm continues to move away from the western coast of Jamaica, rain bands east of the centre continue to impact conditions across the island.

Rainfall amounts of over 75 to 97 millimetres  or 3 to 4 inches have been reported over sections of some southern parishes, resulting in flooding.

Based on the forecast, more rain from the spiral bands the storm are expected to continue into this evening.

The Met Service says higher amounts of rain are likely in higher elevations and landslides should be anticipated along hilly slopes of the island.

At 1:00 p.m. the centre of Tropical Storm Rafael was located about 115 kilometres west north-west of Montego Bay, and 90 kilometres west north-west of Negril Point.

Rafael is forecast to continue moving away from Jamaica today, be near the Cayman Islands this evening and tonight, and be near or over western Cuba on Wednesday.

Some strengthening is expected over the next 24 to 36 hours, and Rafael is expected to become a hurricane near the Cayman Islands, strengthening further before it makes landfall in Cuba.
