Trump says US will send some migrants to Guantanamo Bay

US President Donald Trump has ordered the expansion of the detention centre in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to house 30,000 undocumented migrants who are living illegally in the United States.

Mr. Trump made the announcement right before he signed the Laken Riley Act into law as his administration's first piece of legislation.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has hit out at the plan, calling it an act of brutality.

In a message on his X account the Cuban President described the base as one located in illegally occupied Cuba territory.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez also blasted the announcement.

He said the US government's decision to imprison migrants at the Guantanamo Naval Base, in an enclave where it created torture and indefinite detention centres, shows contempt for the human condition and international law.
