T&T: PM defends decision to remove Columbus' ships from coat of arms

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Keith Rowley, yesterday defended the decision to remove the three ships of the Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus on the coat of arms and replace them with the national instrument, the steelpan.

He said the change is expected to be finalised before Republic Day on September 24, with a six-month transition period to facilitate changes to stationery and other official materials.

Dr Rowley's announcement has been met with division in the public domain, with some politicians, social commentators, and university lecturers indicating that it was being done without proper consultation and is designed to help the government win the 2025 general election.
