Joseph Patterson

The United Independents' Congress (UIC) is preparing to field candidates for the upcoming local government and general elections.
The political party says it is presenting itself as a viable alternative to the two major political parties.
UIC founder Joseph Patterson said the party is still settling its slate and hopes to have "at least five to six" candidates at the MP level.
"We have persons in Westmoreland, in St. Mary, in Kingston and St. Andrew and so on. Each of the candidates must meet certain requirements and so it's very very difficult for us to give you a number unless we clarify them completely."
Mr. Patterson noted that support is growing for the party, based on the reception it has received during canvassing.
"We have gone around to different communities and spoken with people to get an understanding of where they see the UIC in the grand scheme of things. Most persons are very very positive towards the movement but... they're concerned about our ability to have the funding. And so we're working on that steadily and hoping that all Jamaicans will rise to the challenge and fund their own political party which is the UIC."
