One man is dead and several persons injured following a crash on Saturday on Long Lane in Stony Hill, St. Andrew.
The incident occurred shortly before 8am in the vicinity of Red Gal Ring and involved a coaster bus and a petrol tanker.
The bus and the petroleum tanker were heading in opposite directions when the collision occurred as the vehicles negotiated a corner.
The bus driver was killed on the spot while the 16 passengers onboard were injured, some with broken limbs. Hospital sources say one passenger was in a critical condition.
It’s reported that, shortly after the crash, firemen who went to the scene used the "Jaws of Life" machine to assist with the removal of the driver's body.
The driver of the tanker -who was the sole occupant of the that vehicle, while shaken, escaped unharmed.
Officials from the Fire Brigade and Epping Petroleum said greater disaster was averted as the bus crashed into the cab of the vehicle. The tanker, which was fully laden with petrol, was not damaged.
Staff from Epping Petroleum transferred the fuel from the disabled tanker to another unit, while personnel from the police Accident Investigation and Reconstruction Unit processed the scene.
The crash resulted in traffic being diverted to Old Stony Hill Road.
