US Secretary of State expected to meet with CARICOM foreign ministers

CARICOM foreign ministers have reportedly been informed that United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio is to travel to the Caribbean before the end of March for discussions on a number of issues affecting relations with the North American country.

On Sunday, US Special Envoy for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mauricio Claver-Carone, met in Washington with the representatives from several CARICOM countries, including Jamaica.

The meeting discussed several issues ranging from Washington's recent announcement regarding the Cuban health brigade system, to energy and economic development as well as Haiti's security and stability.

According to the Caribbean Media Corporation, its sources say while the regional representatives were informed of the pending visit of Mr. Rubio, no specific date or countries to be visited have been disclosed.

CARICOM countries have defended the Cuban health programme which they say has benefitted the region significantly.

The US Secretary of State announced recently that Washington would be expanding an existing Cuba-related visa restriction policy that targets forced labour linked to the Cuban labour export programme.
