US submarine sinks Iranian warship in Indian Ocean

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has said an American submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean.

He said the ship was sunk by a torpedo on Tuesday, and that it died a "quiet death".

Hegseth did not name the ship, but his announcement came after Sri Lankan officials said its navy had responded to a distress call from an Iranian ship on Wednesday morning named the Iris Dena, which had gone down about 40km (25 miles) from its southern coastline.

Eighty bodies were found aboard the ship by rescuers, a Sri Lankan defence official told BBC Sinhala. Another 32 were rescued, the Sri Lankan navy said.

A navy spokesman said some 180 people were believed to have been aboard the Iris Dena, based on the ship's documentation.

At the same news conference, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, said the United States will strike progressively deeper into Iranian territory.

The UK is also sending a warship to the eastern Mediterranean after attacks on a British base in Cyprus, but it is not expected to set off this week.

Meanwhile, Israel says it hit security headquarters across Tehran, as US-Israeli airstrikes continue in Iran.

A resident told the BBC that the situation was getting worse and worse everyday.

A three-day funeral ceremony for ex-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, due to start Wednesday evening, has been postponed.

Nearly 800 other people, including dozens of schoolgirls have been killed in Iran since the turmoil began on Saturday.

Israel is also hitting Lebanon and new attacks, reportedly from Iran, have been reported in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, while Turkey says NATO defences shot down an Iranian missile.
