Research conducted by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus, has revealed a connection between unfiltered water and the development of kidney stones in some Jamaicans.
In an interview with RJR News, doctoral student Darrion Walker said Jamaica has a high concentration of calcium carbonate in tap and river water which can contribute to kidney stones.
Walker who said 70 persons participated in the research, added that kidney stones are also due to a diet high in salt, potato chips and peanuts.
He lamented that several persons are not aware that they have kidney stones.
“Based on the symptoms, the you present to the doctor, the doctor wil lrecommend an x-ray or a CT scan to confirm the diagnosis. Kidney stones can block the uretha. If you have kidney stones it is very uncomfortable,” he said.
He is recommending that persons boil their water and drink 2.5 litres daily.
