Vaz expects JPS customers to get redress

Transport & Energy Minister Daryl Vaz

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz has given the clearest indication yet that customers of the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) can expect redress in respect of their bills for the current billing cycle.

Mr Vaz said on Tuesday morning that he had received positive feedback from the Office of Utilities Regulation following a meeting with the management of the JPS, "as a result of a letter that I wrote, putting the government's position..."

Accordingly, he said he was expecting a response to his letter later on Tuesday; "and I can say confidently that I expect redress in relation to the latest billing cycle."

The majority of JPS customers have complained of excessively high bills during the current billing cycle, which JPS has attributed to higher fuel charges and the devaluation of the Jamaican dollar,

The OUR said it has launched an investigation following complaints by customers and calls from Government and the parliamentary opposition for JPS to withdraw the bills.

Mr Vaz, who also has portfolio responsibility for Transport, was speaking at a ceremony to hand over buses to the JUTC.
