Vendors on Beckford Street in downtown Kingston are breathing a sigh of relief that the presence of personnel from the Municipal Corporation on Sunday was not to have them removed from the area.

The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation carried out a clean-up exercise to wash the street and clear drains of debris.

Keisha, a vendor for over 20 years, has expressed appreciation for the effort.

"It's a good look you know, because, as I said, our problem was we didn't know that we [were] going to get the opportunity to set back in our table and so forth. So that was an issue. So now we get to understand that it's just a cleaning up campaign before Labour Day, we are quite happy because we want the place to be clean," she acknowledged.

Mayor of Kingston and chairman of the KSAMC, Andrew Swaby said the vendors were notified of the clean-up exercise three weeks ago.

He said it involves an assessment of the utility services in the area and an effort to alleviate sewage issues in the downtown Kingston area.

Mayor Swaby said a decision was made to extend the space for vending following complaints from the vendors. But he is expecting cooperation from the approximately 200 registered vendors to sell within their boundary so that motorists and pedestrians are not impeded.
