VTDI and NCTVET workers on strike again

Operations at the Vocational Training Development Institute (VTDI) and National Council on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) have again been disrupted due to strike action by employees.

The disgruntled workers are insisting that they will not resume duties until the Ministry of Education signs a Memorandum of Understanding on the transition of the entities from HEART NSTA/Trust to the ministry.

On February 28, the Education Ministry met with representatives of NCTVET and VTDI to discuss salary and contract issues.

An agreement was reached following the meeting for an MOU to be drafted and signed by March 14.

However, the workers say the ministry is yet to respond.

"We want to see a document, black and white on paper, telling us how they are solving our issues. What are the plans? We need more answers – at least, we haven't gotten any answers – so we need to take this further. The workers are resolute.... We're sitting in until, this time, the document is in one hand," said Carolyn O'Connor, Jamaica Teachers' Association delegate for the VTDI.

The employees started their protest in January.
