Woman accused of overseas employment racket pleads not guilty

A 34-year-old woman accused of operating an illegal overseas work permit programme in which a number of persons were fleeced of hundreds of thousands of dollars, pleaded not guilty to the charges on Thursday when she appeared in court.

She is Peta-Gaye McKenzie of a Stony Hill, St. Andrew address.

Ms. McKenzie was charged last month following an investigation by the Kingston Central Police.

It is reported that between October and November last year, Ms McKenzie approached several persons and promised that she could secure visas and work permits for them in an overseas work permit programme.

The victims were promised jobs in the United States, Canada and England.

But after collecting $300,000 from her victims, Ms. McKenzie failed to deliver on her promise, claiming the programme ran into problems.

More than 20 victims reported the matter to the police and following investigations Ms. McKenzie was charged.

Ms. McKenzie, who pleaded not guilty, is to return to court on April 16.
