The Barbados
government has announced a six-month amnesty for illegal migrants from the Caribbean.
Prime Minister David Thompson made the announcement in parliament.
Illegal immigrants who entered Barbados before December 31, 2005 and have been living on the island for at least eight years are eligible to apply for the amnesty, which begins in June.
Mr. Thompson said current levels of immigration to Barbados were unacceptably high and posed economic and social challenges.
The Prime Minister said his government was committed to adhering to agreements on migration within CARICOM.
Some neighbouring governments have criticised Barbados' approach to the issue.
