Former T&T prime minister detained in Antigua after allegedly being flagged by INTERPOL

Former Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley was detained on a stopover in Antigua and Barbuda after his name had been placed on an INTERPOL watch list.

Dr. Rowley, a trained geologist, who stepped down from active politics in April, said he was on his way to Montserrat to participate in activities marking the 30th anniversary of the Montserrat volcano Observatory Scientific Opening last Monday when he was stopped.

Dr. Rowley described the order as a dastardly act of political persecution, accusing state entities in Trinidad and Tobago
of fabricating and executing what he called a vicious defamation campaign.

He told a news conference that it was not a mistake, but a deliberate calculated attempt to tarnish his name on an
international stage.

Dr. Rowley, who said he was stunned to learn that Trinidad and Tobago authorities may have caused his name to be flagged internationally, has since called for both Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro to indicate what role they played in having his name placed on the INTERPOL watch list.

In the meantime, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is denying that that Dr. Rowley's name appears on any list maintained by INTERPOL.

The TTPS says it had taken note of the allegations by Dr. Rowley and in light of the assertions, promptly initiated a review of internal systems. It said comprehensive checks were conducted across Interpol's secure databases, which yielded a definitive result - Dr. Rowley is not listed on any INTERPOL watch list or international notice.
