The local track and field fraternity is now mourning the passing of former national junior representative Hujaye Cornwall.
It's understood that Cornwall was killed in a hit and run accident in Walton County, Florida at approximately 2:40 on Thursday morning.
According to reports, Cornwall who turned 26 on Monday, was walking along the roadway on his way home from work when he was struck by a Nissan Titan vehicle travelling in the same direction. The vehicle did not stop and the incident is currently under investigation.
Cornwall, a 100 and 200 metre sprinter, attended St Elizabeth Technical, the Mico University and GC Foster College before migrating to the united states.
He was a member of Jamaica's team to the 2016 World Under-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland and also represented Jamaica at the Pan Am Under-20 and NACAC Under-23 Championships.
Cornwall's high school coach Reynaldo Walcott remembers him as a very diligent athlete. Cornwall has personal best times of 10.39 seconds for the 100 metres and 20.77 seconds for the 200. Latest reports out of Florida say the vehicle involved in the hit and run has been found by the police.
