Anthony "Baba" Nunes' chestnut colt Supreme Soul became the 12th Triple Crown winner at Caymanas Park after capturing Saturday’s 93rd running of the Jamaica St Leger over 10 furlongs. Supreme Soul who was once again ridden by the "Big Race Daddy" Shane Ellis, had to fend off a relentless stretch drive challenge from stable companion Toona Ciliata under Linton Steadman to win by a short head in 2 minutes, 09.1 seconds. Supreme Soul had earlier won the 2000 Guineas and Jamaica Derby on April 14 and June 29 respectively.
It was a historic achievement for Nunes who became the first trainer to saddle the first four past the post in any of the Classics at Caymanas Park as Princess Ava and long-time leader Earn Your Stripes completed the frame.
It was also the first Triple Crown success for Nunes and Ellis while on an individual basis it was Nunes third St Leger winner and the fourth for Ellis. Racing continues next Thursday with the Emmancipation Day programme.
