CONCACAF member nations the United States, Canada and Mexico declared their intention on Monday to formally submit a unified bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. US Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati; CONCACAF and Canadian Soccer Association president Victor Montagliani and the Mexican Federation president Decio de Maria made the announcement in New York. The historic unified bid would represent the first time that three nations would jointly host a FIFA competition.
“We have the full support of the United States government in this project. The president of the United States is fully supportive and encouraged us to have this joint bid. He’s especially pleased that Mexico is a part of this bid and in the last few days we have gotten more encouragement on that,” said Gulati.
The three nations have hosted 13 FIFA World Cups combined, men’s, women’s and youth, which is more than any other trio of geographically connected nations.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first with the expanded 48-team format, requiring facilities and infrastructure which the three countries say they are uniquely suited to fulfill.
