Windies finish group stage of T20 World Cup unbeaten

Co-hosts West Indies finished the group stage of the ICC T20 World Cup  with a perfect record after a comprehensive 104 run win against Afghanistan in a top of the table clash at the Darren Sammy National Stadium in Gros Islet on Tuesday, to seal top spot in Group C.

Sent to bat, the Windies were led by wicketkeeper batsman Nicholas Pooran, as they posted 218-5, the highest total in the tournament so far. It was also their highest total in a Men's T20 World Cup match.

Man of the Match Pooran, who just missed out on a century, went on a rampage blasting 98 from 53 balls, a knock that included six fours and eight sixes. Johnson Charles chipped in with 43 from 27 balls, including eight fours.

There were also useful contributions from captain Rovman Powell who made 26, and Shai Hope 25. Brandon King made 7 and fellow Jamaican Andre Russell 3 not out.

In reply, Afghanistan never got going, losing their first wicket without a run on the board. They were eventually bowled out for 114 in 16.2 overs.

Ibrahim Zandron made 38 and Azmatullah Omarzai 26, as Obed McCoy grabbed 3-12. Akeal Hossein and Gudakesh Motie picked up two wickets each.

The Caribbean side will next be in action when they face the USA in the Super 8 phase of  the tournament on Wednesday.
