Cyber criminals taking advantage of persons with inadequate data protection, says technology expert

Edmundo Jenez

With more local businesses getting into e-commerce, it is being reported that cyber criminals are moving quickly to take advantage of those with inadequate data protection.

Edmundo Jenez, Chief Executive Officer of Jamaica Electronic Transfer Services, says many of the hackers are closer to home than many people realise.

"We have some quite advanced hackers in this country, so we are not inferior in any way to that. They have activities of their own...where they engage in means to be able to compromise systems or otherwise be able to break in. We have a number of ethical hackers in Jamaica; people who are actually trained at very high levels who assist companies in how to defend themselves against other type of hackers," he revealed.

As more people become comfortable using online banking and e-commerce sites, several individuals are falling prey to digital fraudsters.

Despite the implementation of the Cyber Crimes Act in 2010, along with the national cyber-crime strategy, Mr. Jenez said more needs to be done.
