Two children's rights groups have condemned the armed confrontation between hoodlums and members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force in Sligoville, St. Catherine, which left two police officers dead and a 10-year-old child injured.

The Fi We Children Foundation has deplored the wounding of the ten-year-old girl during an armed confrontation between police and gunmen last Friday.

It's reported that the girl was among the occupants of a house where armed men had barricaded themselves during a police operation.

A mother and her six-month-old infant were also inside.

Senior Superintendent of Police Dennis Brooks said the gunmen used the 10-year-old child in an attempt to lure officers into an ambush.

The Fi We Children Foundation has called for a thorough and transparent examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the child was injured.

Meanwhile, child advocacy group Hear the Children's Cry has demanded harsher penalties for people whose acts of violence result in harm or death to a child.

The group said the impact of violence on Jamaica's children is untenable and urged a nationwide response to better protect them.

It has also expressed sympathy to the wounded girl's family and relatives of the policemen killed in the confrontation.
