Local farmers are being urged to increase the production of legumes, in a bid to reduce the local import bill.
Agriculture Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. says in 2021, Jamaica imported 7,424 tonnes of red peas, valued at US$9.4 million.
He says this represents a 416 tonne increase over 2020.
Minister Charles says Home Grown Produce and Agri-Business Ltd's Legumes Expansion Project, which seeks to increase legumes production by training more than 120 farmers should help increase production.
