MSMEs glum about Christmas profits due to weak consumer demand

President of the Micro Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Alliance, Anoinette Hamilton, says the majority of her members have given up on the idea of making any major profits during the Christmas season due to weak consumer demand.

This weak demand is fuelled by tight money supply and low real wages.

Ms. Hamilton also noted that issues with logistics and delays in clearing shipments have had a negative effect on the ability of MSME's to bring in goods in time for the season.

She argued that many MSME's will experience significant cash flow problems in the new year.

Ms. Hamilton said she will be seeking an early meeting with president of the Jamaica Bankers Association Audrey Tugwell Henry and Finance Minister Fayval Williams in the new year to see how members of the Alliance can access more affordable financing.
