Number of skilled Jamaicans who have migrated up from 91,700 in 1980 to 400,000 in 2010 - World Bank

The World Bank says the number of skilled Jamaicans who have migrated jumped from 91,700 in 1980 to 400,000 in 2010.

The Bank noted that teachers, nurses and doctors accounted for the bulk of those leaving, while adding that there were 5,800 teachers with J-1 visas in the USA during the year 2022, compared with 2,800 in 2017.

The World Bank is therefore recommending that the countries receiving these workers coordinate with their countries of origin in the financing and training of the number of skilled workers needed in both countries at particular points in time to solve the brain drain issue.
