The Bank of Jamaica has reported that, although remittance inflows to Jamaica increased by 3.9% to US$255.5 million in January of this year, it lagged significantly behind some other countries in the region.
During the same period the flows to Guatemala surged by 23.8 per cent and to Mexico by 12.3 per cent.
On the other hand, there was only a 1.9% increase in remittance flow to El Salvador.
The central bank also revealed that remittance flows accounted for only 17 per cent of GDP last year compared, with 24 per cent in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
