The Jamaica Fire Brigade has revealed, based on its preliminary investigations, that Sunday morning's fire at New Forum Fishing Village in Portmore started at one of the shops.

The flames, which started about 2:00 a.m.,, destroyed 14 shops, leaving millions of dollars in damage.

Nordia Samuels, a fisher who operated one of the shops, said she was sleeping when she was awakened by shouts of fire.

She lost items valued at more than $600,000, including a boat engine.

A bar and restaurant operator said her two shops were destroyed in the blaze.

Robert Miller, MP for St. Catherine South East, the constituency in which the village is located, has promised to make representation on behalf of the shop operators to secure support for their recovery as soon as possible.
