The Jamaica Constabulary Force has arrested and charged 70 people under the provisions of the new Firearms Act.

The Act came into effect on November 1.

Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson said, of the 70 people charged up to December 20, seven are women and 63 are men.

The majority of them are in the 16 to 30 age group.

General Anderson said he is hopeful that the harsher penalties under the new law will act as a deterrent.

The new legislation has not only increased penalties for illegal possession of firearms, but it has changed the entire regime surrounding the use, handling, sale, and management of firearms by various authorised personnel.

Other key features of the law are the creation of new offences surrounding the illicit trading in firearms, as well as new procedures for how these offences are to be treated in court.
