Alleged kingpin charged with importing illegal guns

The Jamaica Constabulary Force says it has put a major dent in the illegal firearms trade, with the charging of a man described as the mastermind behind the recent illegal importation of 21 guns into the island.

Godfrey Martin, otherwise called 'Rev', a 51-year-old businessman of Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth, was on Wednesday charged with conspiracy to illegally import firearm and ammunition.

In a statement Wednesday, the JCF said Mr. Martin was arrested in Ocho Rios, St. Ann on August 7 by detectives assigned to the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Branch (C-TOC), "following intense investigations, which featured several lines of enquiry".

The weapons were seized at a warehouse in Kingston on March 4 by members of Jamaica Customs Agency.

Eighteen handguns and three rifles and a more than two thousand rounds of ammunition were seized.

Two men based in the United States have been charged in the case.

Mr. Martin is scheduled to appear in the Gun Court on September 16.
