April ends with lowest monthly murders in 25 years

The month of April ended with 44 murders, the lowest number of homicides in a month in a 25-year period.

The government says this achievement follows February's record setting low of 48 homicides, the fewest in a single month since 2000.

Overall, the first quarter of 2025 has seen a 37 per cent reduction in murders compared to the similar period in 2024. Between January 1 and April 27, the country recorded 227 murders.

The progress in the reduction of murders has been attributed to the work and commitment of the Jamaica Constabulary Force as well as sustained investments in national security with unprecedented levels of funding to the force.

During his Sectoral Debate presentation in Parliament on Tuesday, National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang said with a day left in the month, the country was on course to record fewer than 50 murders for April.

At that time, the number of murders was at 42.
