Attorney-at-law Hugh Small and Beyond the Headlines host Dionne Jackson Miller
Prime Minister Andrew Holness is coming under more pressure to take decisive steps toward removing the Queen as Jamaica's Head of State and the UK Privy Council as its final appellate court.
He's being encouraged to use his contribution to the budget debate on Thursday to update the nation on the plans made toward this process.
Attorney Hugh Small, argues that Mr Holness is in a unique position because he is the first Prime Minister born after Jamaica declared Independence, and he has set up a legislative body which could expedite the matter.
Mr Small says Mr Holness has also made certain promises about the matter, so it would be appropriate for him to address them this week.
He reiterated that there are other reasons for Mr. Holness to complete the process to replace the Queen with a new Jamaican Head of State, citing the fact that Holness is Jamaica's first Prime Minister born after the country attained political independence from Britain.
Against that background, he expressed disappointment that the Prime Minister recently accepted appointment to the British Privy Council.
He therefore asked the question: "Why is he subjecting his people to this indignity?"
The interview with the experienced attorney, a former judge of the Supreme Court of The Bahamas, came after he burnt his own judicial wig (no longer worn in the Jamaican courts) and that of his father, the late Justice Ronald Small, in a symbolic protest against the retention of the UK based Privy Council as Jamaica's final appellate court and the other constitutional ties to the British Monarchy.
