Access to affordable capital continues to be a major hurdle for Jamaica's micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, due to the country's limited private equity landscape.
But, investor and associate member of FirstAngels Caribbean and RevUP Jamaica, Delroy McLean, said businesses in this sector must become more investment-ready.
He noted that raising capital is not just about having a great product, it's also about scalability, expansion, and market penetration.
Meanwhile, Douglas Orane, former chairman and CEO of the GraceKennedy Group, and now a member of FirstAngels Caribbean, emphasized that every investment is ultimately an investment in people, not business ideas.
Sandra Glasgow, founder of FirstAngels Caribbean, said the RevUP programme was designed to close a gap identified in its early phase.
She explained that while MSME entrepreneurs have great ideas, many lack the knowledge and expertise to turn them into commercially viable businesses.
