Attorney urges use of body-worn cameras by the police

The Police High Command is again being urged to ensure that members of the police force are fitted with body-worn cameras, especially during special operations.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has been pressing the High Command to implement a body-worn camera system which could be used to answer questions in relation to controversial fatal shootings by the police.

Police Commissioner Dr Kevin Blake has said the High Command is installing the required computer and data collection systems for the body-worn camera policy to be effective, but that this will take some time to be completed.

Attorney-at-law Clive Munroe Junior, speaking Sunday on Radio Jamaica's weekly review programme, That's a Rap, argued that body-worn cameras will serve to reduce mistrust of the police among a segment of the society.

"I think that it is very important, because, to get the public buy-in... it's very important that we get the use of the bodycams," he said, noting as well that the footage captured during police operations can be of benefit to the police as well

There were 185 fatal shootings by the security forces in 2024, according to official statistics.
