Barbados requests AstraZeneca vaccine doses from India

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has written to India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting access to 200,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine being manufactured in the country.

The aim is to have 100,000 Barbadians vaccinated.

In her letter on Friday, Ms Mottley stated that the Barbadian government was willing to purchase half of the supply being solicited.

She said the situation in Barbados has been exceptionally challenging as it has been affected by two waves of the coronavirus.

Dominica's Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has also written to India's Prime Minister seeking Covishield vaccine doses.

The Serum Institute of India, the world's largest vaccine manufacturing company, has been contracted by AstraZeneca to make a billion COVID-19 doses for developing nations.
