Barbados:Gov't backs down on decision to rename Independence Day

The Mia Mottley administration has backed down from its plans to change the name of Independence Day to Barbados National Day.

The decision comes after massive public outcry over the name change, the opposition Democratic Labour Party launching a petition against the change, and a planned march this weekend.

Home Affairs Minister Wilfred Abrahams said in a statement that the Cabinet of Barbados met, reviewed, and decided that November 30th will continue to be referred to as Independence Day.

Mr. Abrahams noted that there will also be a national consultation to come up with the most fitting way to celebrate the transition to a parliamentary republic.
