Bomb scare halts operations at Guyana Elections Commission

A bomb scare at the office of the returning officer with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) in Region Four, led to a brief halt in operations earlier on Thursday.

Region Four is where Guyana's administrative and commercial activities are concentrated and the only region where results are outstanding from Monday's general and regional elections.

It's reported that the bomb squad division of  the Guyana Police Force and the Fire Service arrived on the scene to carry out checks.

However, nothing suspicious was discovered in the building.

The building is serving as the Command Centre for the GECOM operations with the Chief Elections Officer occupying an office there.

It is also the building where the verification of statements of poll is taking place.

Only accredited persons are allowed access to the building.

Security has been tightened around the building as controversy and several delays swirl around the declaration of the results of Monday's elections.
