Dr. Christopher Tufton
Cabinet will be asked to consider the suggestion Jamaicans undergo mandatory COVID -19 testing before returning to the country.
Minister of Health and Wellness Dr. Christopher Tufton has said there was opposition from the Diaspora to the recommendation.
Public health experts and the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) have said the measure is necessary, however, after the increased number of positive cases of the coronavirus.
Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, Dr. Tufton said the suggestion is worthy of consideration.
“I would certainly believe that the government, the prime minister, the Cabinet will consider [it]. I suspect that the concern raised by the JHTA is more a matter of the health threat and the need for the industry to bounce back, recognising that persons coming and testing would reduce spread,” the minister said.
Head of the School of Public Health at University of Technology, Jamaica Professor Winston Davidson has urged the Government not to relent as the measure is the first line of defense against the coronavirus.
