Charges upgraded for former cop who knelt in George Floyd's neck; three others now charged

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison

The former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin who pressed his knee into African American George Floyd's neck, killing him, has been given an upgraded charge of second-degree murder.

The three other officers on scene, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng, have now been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced the charges during a media briefing Tuesday afternoon.

The charges come more than a week after Floyd was killed while in police custody in Minneapolis, sparking nationwide protests calling for an end to police violence against black citizens.

Chauvin had previously been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter while the others were not initially charged.

Two autopsies on Floyd determined that he died by homicide.

Mr. Floyd's death has sparked huge protests across the US against racism and police killings involving black Americans.

The majority of demonstrations over the last eight days have been peaceful, but some have turned violent and curfews have been imposed in several cities.
