The council meeting of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation was brought to an abrupt end for the second straight month since the November 22 by-election in the Aenon Town division.

Chairman and Mayor of May Pen, Joel Williams, again cut short the meeting, as PNP councillors continued to insist that he no longer had the authority to chair the meeting.

Mayor Williams managed to complete his opening remarks but was unable to get much further before he was interrupted by Councillor for the Hayes Division, Scean Barnswell, who insisted "it cannot be business as usual because the by-election would have changed circumstances".

The PNP contends that the JLP no longer controls the council, following the opposition's victory in Aenon Town which resulted in an even 11-11 split of the council.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News following the abbreviated meeting, Mayor Williams accused the PNP of grandstanding, and maintained that the that the law protects his position as mayor and that the business of the municipal corporation will continue.

"We have a lot of issues, and I'm pretty au fait with those issues, and I will work assiduously to continue to work on those matters, as it relates to the things that we need to do to keep the council going," he said.

Councillor Barnswell said the PNP simply wants to have a discussion with Mayor Williams on the way forward, since the JLP no longer enjoys the majority. But he said given the mayor's stance, the PNP will petition the courts for a resolution.

"This matter is now a legal one and our attorney is now dealing with it. So I will just say that for now," he disclosed.
