A veteran public servant is Jamaica's first Fiscal Commissioner.

Minister of Finance and the Public Service Dr. Nigel Clarke said the commissioner was appointed last Friday by Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, on the advice of Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in consultation with the Leader of the Opposition.

The Finance Minister did not name the Fiscal Commissioner, however, the person appears to be Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Courtney Williams.

In announcing the appointment of the commissioner, Dr. Clarke noted that the person had served the Ministry of Finance before spending three years at the International Monetary Fund. He then returned to Jamaica as Deputy Financial Secretary before being recuited since 2020 to serve as permanent secretary in the Ministry of National Security.

The Fiscal Commissioner will head Jamaica's Independent Fiscal Commission.

Dr. Clarke said the commission will be tasked with ensuring fiscal prudence is maintained.
