DCS gets greenlight to hire another forensic psychiatrist

Matthew Samuda

The Department of Correctional Services has been authorised to hire an additional consultant forensic psychiatrist.

The psychiatrist will design and oversee a Forensic Mental Healthcare Programme.

Matthew Samuda, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of National Security, has also outlined plans to construct a forensic ward for inmates in need of psychiatric care.

That plan is being undertaken along with the Ministry of Local Government.

"We have started the process of reversing a tragic mistake made in the 1970s when the then government closed the forensic ward that housed inmates in need of psychiatric care; and the truth is, both sides kicked the can down the road," he admitted.

Mr. Samuda said there are 262 inmates who have been diagnosed with mental disorders.

Some 138 of them are unfit to plea.
